Orientation

Kick-off Phase

  • Meet the Design System Team45 min

An introduction to the team responsible for the design system. Designers, developers, and product stakeholders align on expectations, roles, and ways of working

  • What Is a Design System?15 min

A shared understanding of what a design system is—and what it is not. This session ensures everyone speaks the same language before moving forward.

“Design System Team: Assemble!”

Foundation Phase

  • Assemble Design & Code Assets for Audit2–3 hours

Existing design files and live product code are brought together. Components, styles, and repetitions are made visible to create a solid foundation for analysis.

  • Create an Influence Map1 hour

We identify which products, teams, and processes are impacted by design system decisions. Pilot areas and priorities are defined through this map.

  • Variables & Design Tokens1–1.5 hours

An introduction to managing color, typography, spacing, and state values using a token-based approach. A shared language between design and development is established.

“Identifying & Interviewing”

Discovery Phase

  • Stakeholder InterviewsUnknown

Short interviews with designers, developers, and product stakeholders to uncover current challenges, expectations, and friction points.

  • Pain Points & OpportunitiesUnknown

Insights from interviews and the audit are synthesized to highlight recurring problems and quick-win opportunities.

Define the Rules

Strategy Phase

  • Design Principles1–1.5 hours

Clear and concise principles are defined to guide design decisions. These principles become the decision-making compass of the system.

  • System Scope & Roadmap1–2 hours

The MVP scope, phases, and delivery order of the design system are defined. What gets built, when, and why becomes clear.

Build the System

Execution Phase

  • Color System & Accessibility2–3 hours

A color system aligned with the brand and accessibility standards is created. Semantic roles and usage rules are clearly defined.

  • Typography System2–3 hours

A readable, scalable, and consistent typography structure is established. Usage rules for headings, body text, and supporting text are clarified.

  • Component Library4–6 hours

Core UI components are built with variants and states. A “single source of truth” approach is adopted.

  • Layout & Spacing Rules1–1.5 hours

Grid systems, spacing rules, and responsive behaviors are standardized to ensure predictable and consistent layouts.

Motion with Purpose

Interaction Phase

  • Motion Principles1–1.5 hours

Guidelines define when and why motion is used. Animation is positioned as a feedback and guidance tool—not decoration.

  • Interaction Patterns1–1.5 hours

Consistent interaction rules are defined for hover, focus, loading, and state changes.

Make It Usable

Documentation Phase

  • Documentation Structure1–1.5 hours

The structure, hierarchy, and writing style of the design system documentation are defined to ensure clarity and usability.

  • Usage Guidelines2–3 hours

Clear examples explain when and how components should be used, with common misuses explicitly highlighted.

Keep It Alive

Adoption & Governance Phase

  • Team Enablement1–2 hours

Teams are onboarded through walkthroughs of the system, focusing on real-world usage in daily workflows.

  • Governance Model1 hours

Processes for adding, updating, and approving changes are defined, ensuring the design system remains sustainable over time.

FAQ

I have a few questions…

Check out the FAQ below to learn more before making a purchasing decision. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

Who is this consulting service for?

This service is suitable for startups, scale-ups, and enterprise product teams. It is especially valuable for teams with an existing product that want to improve consistency and scalability.

Is the design system built from scratch?

It depends on the context. If an existing product or UI library exists, the system builds on top of it; otherwise, an MVP-level system can be created from scratch.

Is Figma required?

No, but Figma is recommended for most teams. The principles and system logic are tool-agnostic.

Are developers involved in the process?

Yes. Developer involvement is strongly recommended, especially for components, design tokens, and governance decisions.

Is this a one-time engagement?

No. Design systems are living products. Ongoing consulting or periodic reviews can be arranged if needed.

How long does the full engagement take?

Depending on scope, it typically ranges between 20–60 hours. An MVP system can be delivered in a shorter timeframe.
